NOVEMBER 2021

It is with pleasure that we, the members of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Woodhaven, dedicate our new Serenity Garden and this beautiful work of art by Yvonne Shortt, to the first responders and healthcare personnel who worked tirelessly on our behalf during the global pandemic.  We dedicate it to all members of our community who continued to toil during this precarious time.  All the teachers, repairmen, drivers, supermarket workers, mailmen, mask-makers, delivery men and women, our beloved politicians who organized food drives – everyone -  who turned up and helped out.  We dedicate this to you with our heartfelt thanks.

We recognize and thank you for your selfless commitment and caring, because it is the from your efforts that our neighborhood and New York City better place to live. We are forever grateful for your efforts during this difficult time. And this beautiful sculpture is the perfect way to commemorate your service.

The artist’s inspiration came when visiting our garden last year, where she saw an Iris Versicolor, a wildflower known to grow along banks or in creeks. The flower reminded her of the resilience of wildflowers and our community. From this wildflower came the inspiration for the carving on the front of the sculpture, which symbolizes wisdom, faith, and courage.   Hopefully, we have gained wisdom through our experiences during the pandemic, faith from our community and houses of worship, and the courage to envision a better place for ourselves and our children.

It is with pleasure that the members of the Emanuel United Church of Christ share this beautiful sentiment and artwork with our friends and family in the Woodhaven community as a reminder to thank those who have helped make our world a better place.
